………. what do they say about the perils of worshipping false gods!
A bit of an unsettling narrative about an Amazonian community soon to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the “the Dead Girl”. The chief celebrant and mystic “the Saint” is an exploitative, self centred individual who doubts his own status as “the Saint”, who is simultaneously involved in an incestuous relationship with his father; meanwhile “the Dead Girls” brother is slowly losing his faith in what is the family business. Why has she not returned? What sort of Saint doesn’t perform miracles? “The Saint” is looked after by two overworked Aunts and a young girl. Where is his mother? Well apparently she committed suicide only to return on the 20th Anniversary! Miracles do happen – not one the Saint was praying for no doubt. The film I guess is exploring what makes us believers, in a small Amazonian village in the crossroads of modernity and tradition with no economic activity where the men just drink and the women toil how do you make sense of the world around you? How do you make sense of death? You create religion!
By the way how do you promote a religious festival?
With beer ads of course! Facebook eat your heart out.
